Why Emma Watson is the perfect ‘Belle’

Just a few months ago, Disney released their live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. This Tale as Old as Time has captured the hearts of many and the live-action was just as good as the animation. Both are perfect, with a perfect cast – you can find my review of the film here.

Now I’m a massive fan of Emma Watson – she’s one of my favourite actresses and she’s just flawless and so cute. So I was SO excited when I heard that she was going to be playing Belle! This blog post is definitely going to be slightly biased (like my blog post on why Luke Evans is the perfect Gaston was). But, what can ya do? Here are a few reasons as to why I think Emma Watson is the perfect Belle.

She has the looks that Belle has! Like Belle, Watson is petit, beautiful, and has the brown hair and brown eyes. Yes, they’re quite common features, but it’s very important with casting, which is why it’s a good reason she’s such a good Belle.

Like Belle, Emma Watson is smart; she loves to learn and she even graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English lit. *Fangirls that I’m basically doing the same degree as her.* And yes, that also means that she’s a bookworm, just like Belle – Watson even has her own book club. Books are a big factor in Belle’s life as it gives her a sense of escapism and helps her learn. The fact that Watson is smart and is a bookworm as well helps her relate to Belle and makes her more believable. If Disney chose someone who hated reading and wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, it’d be quite funny to watch, wouldn’t it?

While we’re on the topic of intelligence, it’s mandatory to point out that Emma Watson is a feminist. I think this helps add to why she’s such a good Belle. Belle is quite an empowering and inspirational character, who has no patience for people treating her wrongly. And Watson, particularly shown through her UN and Vanity Fair work, she is also inspirational, empowering, strong and doesn’t have patience for anyone with an attitude like Gastons. She slays and puts those people in their place!

Due to Belle being an empowering character, it’s clear the Emma’s heart will be in the role. She will definitely take the opportunity to help inspire people. But not only that, but Emma Watson also grew up with Disney, so it’s clear that it was a big part of her childhood. As she wrote on Facebook, “my six-year-old self is on the ceiling.” Cute!

Emma Watson is also a romantic. In an interview, she told Vogue, “I think what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering encompassing love – and it being more important and special than anything and everything else.” And being a romantic is, I think, sort of required for a Disney princess movie where love is eventually found.

So there’s my thoughts on why Emma Watson is the perfect Belle. She was everything I hoped she would be like and more! I can’t wait to own the movie and watch it repeatedly. If you still haven’t seen Beauty and the Beast, please go and watch it now. You’re missing out!
